Goodbye 2013! It’s been….real?

2014

2013 was a year of changes and personal growth. I’ve made lasting friendships and realized my personal worth in the job world, learned to not back down when faced with adversity and to hold my head high when all I want to do is crumble into a little ball and cry.

But most importantly, I learned it’s okay to not have all the answers. My life took a VERY unexpected shift a few months ago and at the time it really wrecked me and my confidence. Through the support of my friends and family, I came to realize that this is all a part of growing up. I don’t need to have the perfect job/life at 25 and that me just doing the best I can, is OKAY.

So for 2014 I want to explore EVERYTHING and find out what makes me excited and passionate. Passion it seems, is something that I lost in 2013 and I want that shit back dammit!

So to 2014 all I can say is…BRING IT!

xoxo,

Megan

Wow this is a thing….

ecard

So um, this is a thing that I have and never update…oops! Now that I have some free time in my life, I want to get back into blogging. There is something so freeing about getting thoughts out into the universe even if (and most likely) no one is reading. Plus at some point I want to update my anxiety story, so there’s that.

“So Megan, what HAVE you been up to?” nobody asks.

Well, lots of netflixing and quarter life crisis having with a dash of shark object buying. Mostly the neflixing though. Current obsession: Vampire Diaries. HORRIBLE writing with a dash of hot actors is just what I need at this point in my life. Don’t judge, you secretly watch it too!

But seriously though, I’m just trying to figure out my life. What it is I actually want to do and if I’m in the right career for me.  You know, all that fun contemplative stuff.

Are you going through something similar? Let me know in the comments so I don’t feel so alone. Or you can always tweet me: @MegCorbs

I’ll leave you with a video to get you in the holiday spirit. Even though I’m not as involved in the YouTube world as intensely as I once was,  I still can’t stop watching videos and will let you guys (or the one random reader) know which ones I’m loving.

xoxo,

Megan

I’m ALIVE! Plus an awesome video you NEED to watch.

Helping out and being a part of @mysteryguitarm‘s new video

Sorry for being so M.I.A! I swear I am alive and well, just crazy busy with an exciting new job AND a another little job on the side. So between those two, reading (cuz if you know me well you know I can’t go a day without reading), and time with the bf, there is little time for much else.

Maybe it’s just me but when I start a new job it always take a month of so to finally feel like I am in a rhythm. Where I’m not fully exhausted when I get home and find time for things like blogging and seeing friends more. I think it might just be me being overly cautious not to let my anxiety get out of control even though it’s something that I don’t have to worry about as much anymore.

Anyways, I’ll leave you all with a little video treat. Since I am surrounding by talented people and videos every day, I’ll start sharing more of them here with you all.

Squaresville, an AMAZING new web series I learned about through the new job, is about two teen nerdy girls wanted to get out of thier small town. It’s very Ghost World and I fell in love with it instantly.

Episode 1: Nerds on the Run

So PLEASE watch and support Squaresville. It deserves to be an internet sensation.

Hey #JMS492!

This time tomorrow I will be busy guest lecturing on Social Media at my alma mater San Diego State.

Crazy Huh?

It’s insane to think I will be teaching a class that I was in less than two years ago. This is one of the many reasons why I love social media oh so much.

If you want to give the students of #JMS492 some love, send out a tweet using the hashtag by 9:30 am PST tomorrow (Wednesday) and I’ll show the class during my lecture.

Wish me luck!

That Would Happen to Me: The Time I Convinced a Group of People I Was a Psychic

Side Note: I originally told this story at the last @TNTML stage show so my apologies if you’ve heard it but it’s one of my all-time favorite stories so I wanted to make sure I put it up here as well.

A year ago I participated in the Chevy SXSW road trip challenge as part of Team LA (Woot go SXSW Angels!). That in itself is a crazy story but I will tell that another time! Anyways, there were 10 times across the U.S. and Canada that competed. All of the teams ended up being awesome so of course when we got into Austin that night we partied it up big at a bash thrown for us by Chevy.

Look we had our own drinks. The name is based on the fact that we were the only team that didn’t have wifi in our car.

Afterwards I ended up party hopping with some fellow road trippers and I may have had a few drinks (cmon they were named after us AND were delicious). I somehow ended up in a pretty tech amazing group. There was the girl that created the fail whale and one of the co-founders of Digg just to name a few. We hung out for a little while on the Happiness Bus where I got to meet Tony Hsieh the founder of Zappos!

My little nerdy brain was exploding but I was trying my hardest not to let my age and lack of experience show.  I was just a few months out of college at this point and was interning for a website, while a VERY cool concept, was not very well known. I tried to steer the conversation clear of these topics out of sheer embaressment.

While we were hanging outside of the bus some guy came up and recognized the co-founder of Digg. He very obviously came to chat this guy up and boxed me out of the conversation. Anytime I said anything he gave me this look like “who the eff are you?” When he finally asked this question out loud, I realized that it was time to mess with the d bag a little.

I have this weird talent where if I don’t know you I am THE best liar. If I know you, I feel too bad and it’s written all over my face. Well this guy DID NOT know me nor did he have any desire to talk to anyone that wasn’t big in the tech world.

So my response to him when he asked me who I am?

I told him that I was a well-known psychic. Yup, a psychic. Why I said that, I have NO idea but my drunk mind just came up with it so I went with it.

“Why the hell are you here then?” the dbag asked me.

I proceed to tell him that CEOs paid me to come out here and walk around the trade floor to tell them what the next big thing was going to be. Hence why I was hanging out with this fancy crowd.

He tried to call my bluff and asked me to give him some info on the companies that were about to ‘go big.’ I quickly responded with, “You’re not paying me and I signed a contract with these guys so I can’t release any information to you.”

At this point his WHOLE demeanor changed. He told me that he understand completely. I took this chance to take my whole faux-psychic story a step further and offered to read his palm for him.

I stroked his hand a few times and told him to relax and think about something calming.

I then proceeded to bullshit what each line on his hand meant. I told him that his career line was a little split. In true d bag fashion he said that this made sense because he was going to be CEO of a bunch of start-ups.

I then went into detail about his love line and how it seemed to stop and then start again. He went into this long ass story about his wife and how they were having trouble. Then I started to feel a little bad and told him that I couldn’t do anymore or he’d have to pay me (what? I said I felt bad but not THAT bad). He thanked me multiple times and walked away.

I returned to my little group not aware that they had been listening the whole time.  Fail whale chica and Digg boy said they had no idea that I was in that kind of business. I laughed and told them that it was all B.S.Though not going to lie I was impressed with myself that I convinced not only one person of this absurd story but a whole group.

That crazy adventure still makes me laugh to this day. Hopefully I taught the dbag a lesson in treating EVERY SINGLE person with respect because you never know who they really might be!

Now Reading: ‘American Gods’ by Neil Gaiman

Technically I already finished reading this but the section is called ‘Now Reading’ so I’m just going with it.

‘American Gods’ by Neil Gaiman was definitely one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. Being in the nerd world I had of course heard of Mr. Gaiman many many times but had yet to explore his amazingness until I pick up A.G.

This novel tells the story of Shadow, a recently released inmate who makes a deal to help out a random stranger named Wednesday. He soon learns that Wednesday and his friends are all ‘old gods’ who were brought over to America by immigrants that worshipped them and were quickly forgotten once new traditions became the norm. The old gods can feel a war coming with the new gods (technology, internet, media) and need Shadow’s help to defeat them.

Neil Gaiman has a way of describing the most obscure images so vividly that you can picture it perfectly without a second thought. He creates a believable world in which gods could live among us and how they came to be. I personally love the commentary on how our society has worshipped new gods in the form of technology and media and how their human forms differ immensely from the gods of old.

I highly recommend you read this book. I promise you, you won’t be disappointed! 2 nerdy thumbs up!

#Truth – The Many Faces of Megan Corbett

One thing I’ve been told many MANY times is that I have a very expressive face.

I used to hate this. I dreaded having ANY candid pictures of me get taken because they were NEVER flattering and I always looked like a crazy person. But more importantly if I was ever upset or scared or sad it was written ALL over my face (true fact to this day). When you’re miserable 99% of the time in HS that’s not something you usually want to let people know.

When I went to SXSW last year multiple bloggers that I met told me that I had to start a vlog (I did for a little while, until I started this blog), because of my crazy expressions. Having all these talented bloggers, filmakers and social media kids tell me this made me appreciate my insane storytelling ways and embrace them (something I never really did).

A few weeks ago I was part of the @TNTML stage show where I told the story about my first night in Australia. The following GIF (made by the amazing @heatherborges) is comprised of pictures taken of me during this 10 min story.

Enjoy!

Obsession of the Moment: BlueBird EP

I recently got a message from the amazing and talented Chris French letting me know that an EP he had produced had been released.

Of course I went and bought it immeadiately off of iTunes. I am still obsessed with Annie Automatic‘s (his band) new cd and I knew if Chris had a hand in this EP than it had to be good.

The EP for BlueBird (aka @bricuoco) did not disappoint.

Right from the start the beautiful melodies and her soulful voice put you at ease. Which coming from a girl with a history of anxiety is a HUGE compliment.

The thing I love most is how Bri’s voice COMPLIMENTS the music, not overtakes it. Don’t get me wrong, this girl has a set of pipes on her but she doesn’t feel the need to show them off unnecessarily. She lets herself become almost secondary to the array of instruments which honestly just shows off her talent more.

Every song has lyrics that just ‘get to you,’ in a good way of course. Like her song ’October.’

“Its perfect weather for breaking hearts and i’m wearing layers so its harder for you to peel me apart.”

I’m a lyric person (it’s the book worm in me) so I appreciate well written songs.

The wonderfulness of this EP ends with a cover of the song “Be My Baby” featuring @joegillette. I love the way their voices work together and it’s a nice cover of a song that always makes me smile.

I can’t say enough good things about this EP, and not becuase I know who produced it but because I genuinely love it. So c’mon @iamfrench and @bricuoco release a full album already :) .

And please please please support GOOD music and buy this EP. If you don’t like it, I’ll pay you back myself!
